Hello Ray
In Southern Oregon where I live many sightings are at night. Darkness is used to give them the seclusion they require.  On occasions where there has been interaction in daylight it was the throwing of rocks or pine cones from a distance which provided a quick retreat into the woods. Frequently people just driving either in remote areas or at night see them.  I live near a creek called
quartz creek and a woman that lives near the creek went out on her back porch at night and frightened one off her porch. The area is very wooded and is in an area with much Forrest and wilderness areas. If you do a web search for Bigfoot sightings in Southern Oregon you will find much of this documented.
Other than caves I feel they just nest down under one of the many evergreens that we have.  Some have limbs that go down to the ground. Some are like tents underneath them.  They would have protection from rain or snow.
We have quite a few salmon rivers going through wilderness areas.
The nearest to me would be the Rogue River. It gos through 80 miles of wilderness to reach the ocean. The bears catch salmon from them when they are running.  I've seen salmon coming upstream and it looks like the river is full of  fish everywhere. Well thats my thoughts.
