I've long said I think most actual sightings are just misidentification of bears. That they can in fact walk upright and likely some have adapted to do so just furthers that thought.

Bears--mis-identified bears--are one possibility.  But I doubt that that is an explanation for all of the sightings.

A couple of cops over in GA reported they found one a couple years back didn't they? How'd that turn out again?  Shocked
